CONGENER-SPECIFIC BIOACCUMULATION OF PCBs IN DIFFERENT WATER BIRD SPECIES
نویسنده
چکیده
The bioaccumulation behaviour of single PCB congeners in three trophic levels of a food chain in an aquatic ecosystem was studied. Congener-specific biotransfer factors were calculated comparing PCB concentrations in tissues of 4 water bird species with the contents measured in their food source. The coplanar PCBs were of particular interest. The maximum concentrations of individual PCB congeners detected in mussels, fish and birds were 0.5, 4, and 26 pg/g extractable lipids, respectively. In general, the mussel-feeding tufted ducks showed lower PCB levels than the fish-feeding bird species. The biotransfer factors were highest for the non-ortho chlorosubstituted coplanar PCB congeners from lake trout to grey herons (3 to 15, depending on the congener). If the TCDD toxic equivalency (TEq) concept based on mammalian toxicity data is used for the toxicological assessment the detected PCB levels are in the range where effects on the reproductive impairment of theses bird species could result. However, no indication for such effects could be observed. This suggests that species-specific TEF values are required. @ 1997 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved

PCB levels and accumulation patterns in waterbird eggs and in their prey at Lake Kerkini, a north-eastern Mediterranean wetland of international importance.
Seven "target" PCB levels were determined and compared in waterbird eggs, in their prey, and in water at Lake Kerkini, northern Greece, to investigate PCB bioaccumulation patterns and to define the best bioindicator of target PCBs for this area. PCBs were analysed from eggs of Phalacrocorax carbo, Podiceps cristatus, Ardea cinerea, Egretta garzetta, and Nycticorax nycticorax and from prey types...
متن کاملBioaccumulation and trophic transfer of polychlorinated biphenyls by aquatic and terrestrial insects to tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor).
Insectivorous passerines often bioaccumulate polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) via trophic transfer processes. Tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) frequently are used for estimating PCB bioaccumulation, yet the focus on specific trophic links between contaminated sediment and bird has been limited. Bioaccumulation of PCBs from sediment to tree swallows was examined with focus on trophic pathways...
متن کاملThe Effect of Polychlorinated Biphenyls on the Song of Two Passerine Species
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are synthetic chemical pollutants with demonstrated detrimental toxic and developmental effects on humans and wildlife. Laboratory studies suggest that PCBs influence behavior due to their effects on endocrine and neurological systems, yet little is known about the behavioral consequences of sublethal PCB exposure in the field. Additionally, specific PCB congene...
متن کاملAnalysis, source identification and health risk assessment of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) in surface soils from different land types of northern, eastern and western parts of city of Tehran, Iran
Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are a group of persistent organic pollutants that due to their characteristics including bioaccumulation potential and persistence in the environment; can pose adverse effects on human and environmental health. Therefore, this study was performed to analysis, source identification and health risk assessment of PCBs in surface soil samples collected from some lan...
متن کاملDependency of polychlorinated biphenyl and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon bioaccumulation in Mya arenaria on both water column and sediment bed chemical activities.
The bioaccumulation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) by the filter-feeding soft-shell clam Mya arenaria was evaluated at three sites near Boston (MA, USA) by assessing the chemical activities of those hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) in the sediment bed, water column, and organisms. Polyethylene samplers were deployed to measure the activities ...
